[Interview] The reason why the 'Star Citizen' development team came to Korea

If there is a legend in the crowdfunding game, the 'Star Citizen' is probably at the peak. Star Citizen and many legends have many things in common. It's old, leaving a huge impression, and in fact.

Even though it started as an indie game, it has been developing for nearly 10 years, and it is not well known to the world, while applying technology with tremendous possibilities. And it's definitely a physical game, but the finished version is still a farming. Where else is this legend?

Nevertheless, the reason why Star Citizen is receiving attention is that the tremendous possibilities of the game continues to become a reality. Star Citizen, who actually played before, was a huge game that didn't know where to explain. Would it be a bit similar to implementing a microscopic world in 'Eve Online' and changing the point of view to a first person? It was a bit difficult to motivate because it was not a complete work, but at least the answer to why the game was expected was enough play.

※ The specific introduction to the game is replaced by the universe of the [Experience], 'Star Citizen' article.

Nevertheless, Star Citizen is relatively unknown. The developer, Cloud Imperial Games, rarely does outside activities. Not only marketing or PR, of course, does not appear in game show B2C. The only users of the community are the users of the community. In the meantime, the majority of major developers entered Korea, and the question was first questioned before surprise. Why?

Q. First I want to ask this. Why did you come to Korea?

= Now we are interviewing media, but in fact, the purpose of coming to Korea is not the purpose of marketing or media exposure.

Surprisingly, in the past two years, Star Citizen's community has grown 175%. Most of our developers are in Europe, the United States, and Canada, so it can be relatively comfortable with the community in the region, but the linkage with the Asian community has been physically difficult. In the meantime, we visited Korea because we invited us from the Korean community.

As we will continue to say in the future, in the development of our game, the community plays an important role that is not just a subsidiary, but one of the main axes. Meeting and solidarity with the community was very important to us, and there was no reason to hesitate when I was invited.

Q. To strengthen the connection with the Korean community means that Korean can be applied to the game?

= The game company itself has just set up a localizing team, and in fact, there is nothing we have done so far, but it is being translated into nine languages in communities around the world. Even now, if you turn on the game, you can play the Korean version, which is also a translation version produced by passionate Korean community members.

As mentioned earlier, Star Citizen has been with the community since the start, and the capital structure also originated from the community, and the development process is also a process of stepping with the community. If we are in charge of development, polishing, and art, the community is a huge planning team, and at the same time it can be said to be the same as some of the development teams that fill the parts we have not dealt with.

Q. The main purpose was to meet with the Korean community, but what did you actually meet?

= I was able to receive a lot of feedback, and in fact, my butt was a bit hot. When I went back, I didn't have one good feedback I would like to apply right away. In the case of the game localization mentioned earlier, it is only a part of the much feedback, and the Korean community gives a lot of excellent feedback inside and outside the game.

The biggest hint is that I could see an example of outside game accessibility. There was a lot of opinion on how more users could know the charm of Star Citizen. I also received a good gift, and the ship model in front of the community was produced and presented by the community.

Q. There is a large community in Korea, but I know that it was not a developer yet, but is it now a public community?

As I said, we started developing the game through community funding, and it is actually a joint project concept. As the growth of the Korean community is very fast, I think it would be better to select a community manager or select new talents to connect with the Korean community.

We have created a place of communication called 'spectrum', but there is a disadvantage that gamers who use other languages because English are certified languages. For example, Korea is also considering whether it can create a kind of central point that community members can gather through Never or Aka channels. Communication with the community is the basis of Star Citizen and the biggest value.

Q. In order to play the game, you have to approach the donation payment method, but the procedure and system were not familiar with Korean gamers. Are you considering the addition of other payment systems? In addition, since the donation amount is matched to the average of the Western region, it may be a bit burdensome in low-income countries.

Star = The donation required to play the game is set at $45. If you donate more money, you can get a better ship, but in fact, these ships can be obtained through in-game activities, so you can think of the price of $45. If it was a concept of donation before, it is the same as the game purchase of early access.

In addition, the company is holding a free flight event in the game, and if you have an account, you can enjoy the game for free for a certain period of time without donating. If you feel burdened with the price of the game, it's not bad to play after playing the game for this period.

In the case of the payment system, China is pursuing the introduction of Alipay and WeChat. Korea is also willing to add a new payment system if the user base is bigger. Aka Pay or credit card base payment system and so on.

** Q. The biggest attraction of Star Citizen is a micro-approach to the macroscopic world. All planets in the game are not procedural formation, but they are a planet that allows each one by one, and all of them can land and explore them.

= There are currently one sanctuary, 12 to 14 planets, satellites, space stations, and small mining zones, and each planet has a city that is expressed inside. Our long-term goal is to create and connect all of them all, so that version 4.0 is applied and PES (persistent streaming) related technologies will show more possibilities. The current planets and satellites are a space that embodies the ecosystem one by one, not random formation.

Q. Since the game is in the form of a seamless form without loading since the initial loading, many gamers will inevitably occur in the server load. How much is the maximum connection?

= There are a total of 100 people per server, but in fact, the number of people is not meaningful. This is because through the server mesh technology, the data between each server is organically connected, and several servers continue to send and receive data. For example, when a player opens a room door or attempts to land in a space station, the server may change, but I can't recognize it.

In addition, even if there is a person on another server right in front of you, it can be seen as a firm, and it is possible to shoot each other or ride in the ship.

Q. Since it has already been developed for 10 years and is a game with live service in mind, the development process will not end even if the formal release is made. I think it's a matter of time, but when is the game taking off the alpha stage?

Internally, I think that when the basics are equipped in terms of accessibility and play experience, it is time to enter the beta. The quantitative aspects of the content will continue to be developed in the future, but all the systems that will be the basic frame of the game are all equipped. At that time, you will probably take off the alpha scab and start the beta.

Currently, as the alpha stage is in the alpha stage, users are introduced only by viral without any external marketing, but about 2.3 million people have participated in the alpha test. After the beta version, more gamers are expected to step into the universe of Star Citizen.

Q. Then, if it is a beta version, will all the data of the gamers currently in play will be reset?

= We have been developing for quite some time and have actually reset data several times. Gamers who are currently playing games are fully aware of the fact that the game is in the alpha stage and the data is reset periodically. It's probably no different from the beta version.

Q. As you have made a real-scale universe, there may be boredom from long-distance movements. Is the devices that can solve this exists in the universe of Star Citizen?

= First, it is true that ships play a very important role in Star Citizen, but the ship is not a player. Gamers can turn on the autopilot on the go and do various activities in the ship. Enjoying chess with your passenger or arranging transportation of cargo compartments.

Also, if you want, you can make a flight nearly 5 days in actual time with another planet.
